Turmeric is something that you will always find in my kitchen (and my pharmacy cabinet). Known for its bright yellow color, the turmeric root has many health benefits. He also doesn't have the greatest taste. These fatty bombs are a delicious way to get your daily turmeric supplement!
Advantages of turmeric
So why is Turmeric so incredible? This rhizome has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and is from the culture of Southeast Asia, in particular India. Its bright yellow color comes from its curcuminoids, some of which are extracted for curcumin supplements.
There are more than 7,000 clinical studies on the effects of turmeric and more than 20,000 on its main active ingredient, curcumin extract.
The researchers studied its impacts on blood sugar, balanced cholesterol, heart health and other health problems. Food supplements of turmeric extract have been promising for blood pressure, heart disease and general heart health.
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
It is a powerful antioxidant to reduce oxidative stress and free radicals to protect our cells. Turmeric is probably the best known for its anti-Doler and anti-inflammatory effects.
Health care providers recommend it for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain and muscle pain. So, instead of reaching ibuprofen, first try turmeric! And as it is anti-inflammatory, it can help ulcerative colitis and Alzheimer's disease. A 2021 review revealed that curcumin reduced brain plates and prevented the death of brain cells.
Turmeric supplements
Although there are many clinical trials and thousands of years of evidence behind turmeric, all turmeric is not the same. A 2023 study revealed that spices from India (namely turmeric) had more than triple the amount of lead found in American spices. While turmeric is contaminated, other formulations add charges and other waste.
You can find geomatics of turmeric curcumin, frosty and turmeric pills. I generally prefer to obtain my own turmeric powder which was tested by a third party for lead. I will use it in smooths, coffee and homemade curry powder. Unlike curcumin supplements, you get the full spectrum of the advantages of turmeric.
A quick note on side effects. High doses of curcumin could interfere with anticoagulants, such as warfarin. If you are on anticoagulants or provided for surgery, consult your health care provider before using turmeric supplements.
DIY turmeric supplement
I regularly add turmeric to my food, but these DIY turmeric bombs give you a more concentrated amount. They are perfect for you need more than one anti-inflammatory boost. And they have much better that I try to drink turmeric powder mixed in the water (talk about bitter!).
Make it even better
Some ingredients increase the bioavailability of curcumin and turmeric. This means that our body is able to make the most of it and see more health benefits. The following helps stimulate the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric and antioxidant properties.
- QuercetinA bioflavonoid, inhibits an enzyme that reduces curcumin activity.
- Black pepper Contains powerful alkaloid piperine. Black pepper extract can increase the bioavailability of curcumin up to 2,000%.
- Fatty acids (like coconut oil) also mainly increases bioavailability.
I add the above ingredients to turmeric, honey and spices for a delicious and more efficient supplement.
How to make turmeric bombs
Honey helps bind turmeric powder and helps hide the bitter taste. Coconut oil makes it creamy and rich. These are supposed to be small, the size of a quarter. Eat too much coconut oil at the same time could cause stomach aches (and a bathroom race!).
Be careful by mixing them because turmeric colors clothes and can stain the skin. Although curiously, it whitens the teeth!
